One-day seminar in Casino Flamingo Gevgelija and practical teaching tourism fair in Thessaloniki, arranged for over 150 students, free of charge, as part of the strategy of UTMS dedicated to linking the theory with practice.
On 23rd of November, 2012, the students from the University of Tourism and Management in Skopje, were given an opportunity to attend the study tour to the Tourism Fair "Filoxenia 2012" in Thessaloniki, Greece.
In accordance to their own strategy, continually linking theoretical knowledge of students with business practice, UTMS offered its students an exclusive opportunity to attend a seminar in "Casino Flamingo" in Gevgelija, where three presentations were held by the management structures of this extremely successful business object, a company which in terms of its profit figures last year, placed itself among the most successful Macedonian companies.
The first presentation was arranged by the financial manager of "Casino Flamingo," Mr. Novak Lucic (MSc in Economics at UTMS, year 2012), which gave some insights about the business history of the casino, from the idea to the realization of the investment, with particular emphasis on market analysis and the assessment of the investment’s efficiency. Further on, an elaborated business strategy of the casino was provided, in terms of financial analysis, organization sectors, the division of responsibilities and functions. In the analysis of the financial operations of the casino, it is noteworthy to mention that the ROI (return on investment), which is one of the largest in the field of tourism in the Republic of Macedonia, took only 4 years, which is above the world average. The manager Lucic, thoroughly focused on the management issues concerning the operational risk and liquidity of the casino industry.
The second lecturer referred to the use of the operating software "macro Fidelius", which can be found in the most reputable hotel brands. This software is obtained by UTMS as well, and the University plans to organize training for its students (undergraduate and postgraduate), as well as outsiders. By using this software, casino Flamingo successfully manages not only the accommodation capacity of the guests in the hotel, but a complete service to the guests, ranking them in order of priority and the status of the casino. This software enables monitoring the financial performance of all services within the casino, which provides all the relevant information about the company's back office.
The third lecturer presented the casino’s security system, explaining policies and procedures, which are the strictest in this activity. The Casino monitors its activities with more than 360 cameras, following every segment of the game in the casino with at least two cameras.
The students had the opportunity to see the casino in terms of the working processes of each of the presented content (services or features). Through the seminar they had the opportunity to gain theoretical and practical knowledge of the daily operational management of this business facility.
After a short trip, the students visited the renowned Tourism Fair Filoxenia 2012, in Thessaloniki, Greece, where the touristic arrangements of Greece, Turkey, the former Soviet republics (Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, etc..) were presented. At the Fair, the students were divided into groups, each faculty was led by the appropriate Dean or professors who analyzed the exposed stands, products and travel destinations to the students, from practical point of view. This was an exclusive opportunity for the students, a place to learn about tourism, sports tourism, economics, marketing, public relations, entrepreneurship and human resource management.
Fairs are places where the overall creativity and dexterity of companies, entrepreneurs, regions and even countries comes to the fore. The most powerful hotel brands and famous destinations (Tassos, Lefkada, Skijatos etc..) attracted the focal attention. The students have shown exceptional interest and according to their own words, they learned a lot.
At the end of this study tour, the students had the opportunity to enjoy the shopping in "Cosmos".
We must emphasize that the educational seminar and study tour, which was attended by over 150 full-time students of all faculties within UTMS, was fully organized by the University, free of charge, by which UTMS once again confirmed its role as a leader in higher education in Macedonia and confirmed its position as one of the most socially responsible companies in the country.
